Power in mixed exchange networks: a rational choice model

American Sociological Review 61, 308–332. , this paper clarifies some major principles regarding the distribution of power in mixed exchange networks. Mixed exchange networks are exchange networks where both substitutability and complementarity exist among multiple exchange relations of an actor. Illustrative examples of 15 distinct dating networks consisting of two boys and two girls are used for the purpose of clarifying and applying those principles. General implications for both network studies and rational choice theories of the theory developed in this paper are also discussed. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All
